It’s a well known fact that climbers are obsessed with their gear. It just comes with the territory. Though the basic essentials for a day/weekend/week/month/lifetime of climbing is mostly the same, each climber has his/her own preferences and specific style. The gear is not always about ‘the latest and greatest’ but rather safety, performance, functionality, and design. This first edition of In the Bag is from the bag man himself, Danny. Here are his thoughts on his climbing bag and the gear that accompanies him on a day of climbing.
DANNY’S CLIMBING BAG
Topo Designs Klettersack – First things first, I LOVE BAGS. It’s bad, but so good. It is no secret that my latest obsession has been with the classically styled, yet modernly motivated bags of Topo Designs. I use their Klettersack everyday, whether that is to and from the office or out climbing. I have added a minor modification to the one I take climbing with Metolius buckles to make it a bit more friendly for carrying a rope.
Black Diamond Momentum SA Harness – Simple, light, and the subtle colors.
La Sportiva Testarossa – Sportiva just makes the shoes for me, the Testarossas are my latest…love them.
Topo Designs Cinch (chalk) Bag – Topo is my jam.
I Love Rock Climbing Brush – The only climbing brush I’ll ever own.
Petzl Nomad Rope – This green monster gets the job done and then some.
Food – usually beef jerky, classic Power Bars, Bread & Cheese, McDonalds Breakfast Burrito, and Dots.
Nalgene Silo – I call it the torpedo, but it is just a long Nalgene that holds 1.5L of water.
Thermos of Coffee – I don’t have the energy that I did as a young buck, so I rely on caffeine for a boost.
First Aid Kit – Boy Scouts taught me to ‘Be Prepared.’ You never know what will happen out there.
Leatherman Knife – Multitool is an understatement.
Iphone – Not for texting, calling, or browsing….it is my primary camera.
Headlamp – If you are feeling it, don’t stop until the sun goes down. Just make sure you have a light to lead you home.
Pocket Bible – God is in the wilderness, no doubt.
Picture of my wife – I love her. Even if she is climbing with me that picture is coming with.
Field Notes & Pen – You never know when that “next idea” will hit you.
The Crag Sticker – Climbing trips are the best way to spread The Crag love. I love rock climbing!
Several of these items are available at The Crag Shop, and if not, we are happy to lead you in the right direction. If you feel like chatting about gear with Danny give him a shout at [email protected] or connect with him on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.
